DESIGN: Habibi Sheesha Lounge

A new hookah lounge has opened in Niagara Falls, NY called Habibi Sheesha Lounge. Serving over 70 different flavors of sheesha, the lounge also provides a menu with a variety of beverages—soda, smoothies, shakes, etc—and a mix of American and Middle Eastern snacks/desserts. Asked to create a logo, menu, and business card, the first step was figuring out what to do for iconography. Playing around with different Arabic motifs, the Egyptian flag colors, and the idea of a hookah, my first designs went in the direction of elegant patterns and…

DESIGN: Miles to Go Endurance

Ryan Knapp—one of the men behind Buffalo’s soccer club FC Buffalo—got a hold of me from Kansas City in search of a logo for his new endeavor Miles to Go Endurance Co. The final design is something I really think depicts the concept of endurance and the never-stop attitude so many athletes cultivate. I was told that the enterprise was to target the endurance lifestyle—running, biking, swimming—and took its name from a Robert Frost poem. In Ryan’s words: Inspired by a stanza in the Robert Frost poem “Stopping by Woods…

DESIGN: P2 Collaborative Conference Program 2011

2011 P2 Collaborative Conference Program 2011, published by Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. Based off of the P2 Collaborative’s design branding and last year’s program, I designed their third annual conference book with minor tweaks, including schedules, speakers, maps, and other weekend activities. The big change this year was a new look cover with supplied image to coincide with new identity.

DESIGN: The Western New York Performing Arts Guide 2011

2011 The Western New York Performing Arts Guide 2011, published by Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. Front Cover: Thinking back to the children’s puzzles where a cube would have four different heads, torsos, and legs that you could twist to mix and match, I decided to base this year’s cover design on the same concept. Making the head portion Theater, the torso Music, and the legs Dance, I scoured our stock photography database to find the perfect fit. Inside Layout: Building off of 2010’s design, I kept the three column format,…

DESIGN: Buffalo Spree magazine – July/August 2011 cover entry

2011 Buffalo Spree magazine – July/August 2011 published by Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. Cover contest entry: For the 2011 Buffalo Spree magazine, July/August Best of WNY issue, our company’s art department was put to the task to create a striking cover. With my entry, I wanted to make people stop and pick the magazine up from the newsstands to see what is going on. It’s very minimal—the concept of ‘Best of’ stripped down to its essence, an envelope containing the winner. It would have, at the very least, definitely stood…

DESIGN: Theodore’s Original Hot Dogs [spec]

When Theodore’s Original Hot Dogs was in its infancy, I was asked to develop some ideas on a logo design. Seven iterations later, the final circular crest below, in two colors, was made as a start to what could have been a full-scale branding of the company. In the end, the company decided to go in a different direction, but the designs exist nonetheless as follows. Three early examples from the initial seven designs. The first playing off a circular squirt of condiments; the second an abstract flame from yellow…

DESIGN: The 2011 Decorator’s Show House Program

2011 The 2011 Decorator’s Show House Program, sponsored by Junior League of Buffalo and The Buffalo News published by Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. Our goal was to infuse bright, vibrant colors throughout the book, contrasting the plain, grayscale books of the past. Inside Layout: Building off of 2009’s design,…

DESIGN: MyFavorites.com [spec]

Having a seven degrees of Kevin Bacon moment connecting me to a design contest online for a new website called MyFavorites.com, I decided to throw my hat into the ring with an entry. By following the design brief copied below, I looked to create a brandable, unique star/heart hybrid as requested, incorporating the ‘MY’ from the name as its basis. The design was unfortunately not picked amongst the 800+ entries, but I still believe it’s something worth keeping on file and adds a bit more professionalism to the goofy entries…
